On May 20, McKay announced that Lex Luthor would be in the movie and revealed that Lego Superfriends was a scrapped working title. In 2020 it was announced that the development of the film had been put on hiatus due to negotiations over the rights to the franchise. Will Arnet will return in the title role. In September 2019, Variety reported that Michael Waldron and Dan Harmon will write the script for The Lego Batman Movie 2. It was also revealed which film was scheduled to premiere in 2022. On December 5, 2018, Chris McKay announced that a sequel to the film was in the works and that he would return to be the director.
